Motorcycle Ownership Transfer in Bangladesh

Buying a used bike means changing the registration into your name. Here is what BRTA asks for.

Checked against BRTA's own documents on 28 September 2026, government sources only. Source.

The fee

Under rule 49(2) of the Road Transport Rules 2022, the transfer fee is one third of the registration fee for the bike's class, to which BRTA's charter adds 15 percent VAT. The registration fee is Tk 2,000 for a bike up to 100 cc and Tk 3,000 above, so the transfer fee works out to about Tk 667 or Tk 1,000 before VAT. BRTA does not print the rounded figure for the smaller class, so check the amount on the BRTA receipt.

Documents BRTA asks for

  • The seller's notice, the buyer's declaration and the sale receipt, on BRTA forms 20, 21 and 22.
  • The original registration certificate or digital registration certificate.
  • Attested copies of the up to date tax token.
  • Attested copies of both parties' national identity cards.
  • Separate sworn affidavits from buyer and seller on non judicial stamp paper, with photographs.
  • A sample signature form with three stamp size colour photographs.
  • The receipt for the transfer fee.
  • If the bike was financed, the lender's clearance; if either party is a company, a letter on its letterhead with the board resolution.

BRTA's own pages disagree on whether the buyer's TIN certificate is needed for a motorcycle: one lists it for cars, jeeps and microbuses only, another asks for it without saying which vehicles. Bring it if you have one.

Before you hand over money

Check that the registration certificate matches the chassis and engine numbers on the bike itself, and that the tax token is current. Unpaid road tax becomes your problem the moment the bike is in your name.
