Why 165 and not 170

Imported motorcycles have long been capped at 165 cc in Bangladesh. That single rule shapes this whole page: manufacturers build right up to the line and stop, so a class that would be arbitrary anywhere else is the top of the market here. It also explains why a bike sold as a 180 or a 200 elsewhere in South Asia arrives in Dhaka as a 165, detuned to fit.

Locally assembled machines above that limit have more recently been permitted, up to a higher ceiling, which is why a few larger bikes now appear on this site at all. The rule has changed more than once and the detail differs between importing, assembling and registering, so if you are looking at anything above 165 cc, get the dealer's position in writing and confirm with BRTA before you pay.

What the extra capacity actually buys

Against a 150, the gain in outright power is smaller than the number suggests. What usually comes with it is a better chassis: larger discs, stiffer forks, wider tyres, and more often than not a liquid cooled engine that holds its performance through a long hot crawl instead of fading. If your riding is entirely commuting, that is a lot of money spent on things you will rarely use.

The running cost nobody quotes

This class sits in a higher BRTA fee band than the commuters below it, and the consumables cost more too. Wider tyres and larger discs are not the same price as a 125's. Work out the whole first year, not the showroom figure.
